Happy Friday, everyone!
It’s been — and continues to be — quite a week with global events. The pace of life is fast and can be overwhelming. Plus it’s Friday the 13th! Whoa.
But fear not: I woke up with this song in my head today, and it’s got a great beat that I think you might enjoy. While the story in the song seems a little complicated — I think it’s about the writer putting his life back together after a breakup, looking back on good times and looking ahead with hope. I’m going to go with that, anyway.
“Now I’m stuck in the slow lane
On the useless side of my brain
The one that drives
A thinking man insane
Wishing his circumstances
Never have to change
And my life is just around the bend
And these broken hearts can mend
It just takes time, time, time
It takes time, time, time”
(from “Straight Shot,” by Nick Urata)
Devotchka is a four-piece band from Denver, Colorado in the USA, and they use many instruments not usually found in rock music like the bouzouki, trumpet, violin, accordion and flute. And while “Straight Shot” is the only song of theirs that I own, I heard some other great ones through autoplay on their YouTube channel after grabbing the link to the official video (and of course listening to the song). The band also did the score for the film, Little Miss Sunshine. I’ll definitely be picking up more of their music. It’s got a great vibe to it.
It’s a beautiful day here in Winnipeg, Canada… the sun is shining, and though it’s a little chilly and pretty windy, spring (and outdoor cycling weather!) seems like it’s just around the corner.
Hope is important these days, maybe a little more than ever. Whatever state you are in at this moment, I hope you have a great day and a really good weekend.
Now you know a little about why this is my song of the day for today. Thanks for joining me here, and please enjoy.
Here’s the official video from Devotchka’s YouTube channel (and for my friend who asked me once if there are videos with lyrics, well, this is a song that has a lyric video, too… it’s here. There’s also a third YouTube video on the channel for this song; it’s audio-only with their 2018 album This Night Falls Forever cover art as a static image, but I think we’re okay without that one…):
