(Warning: This song contains a cuss-word.)
LP (born Laura Pergolizzi) is an American singer/songwriter who has written songs for artists including Christine Aguilera, Mylène Farmer and Céline Dion. Those aren’t favourite artists of mine, and I admit that had I known this before hearing her, I might have given her a pass-by — a reminder to me always to keep an open mind.
“Lost on You” is the single she’s best known for, and another song I learned of through Shazaming one of our sons’ playlists, that time when we were on a mini road trip out of the city for an extended family dinner. Another song from that trip was Martha Wainwright’s “Factory.” (I’m very grateful to the developers of Shazam, as they have enabled me to capture songs I have enjoyed immensely, and likely never would have discovered on my own.) Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black featured “Lost on You” in the closing scene of the fourth season finale. I sought out the track out on iTunes, and that shopping foray also led me to today’s selection, “Other People.”
LP’s androgynous style and slightly drawly voice make her an enticing artist. Her music is classified as alternative, though some has a tinge of outlaw country, and some songs punctuated with fabulous whistling. “Other People” opens with a pleasant dose of that.
Now you know a little about why this is my song of the day for today. Thanks for joining me here, and please enjoy.
