The Power of the Heart

In my post on Bon Iver’s “Flume,” I shared the orchestral cover Peter Gabriel recorded on his 2010 album, Scratch My Back, and mentioned the companion album of artists playing Gabriel songs, And I’ll Scratch Yours. (As an aside, it’s been said by some that few can cover Gabriel compositions very well. I agree, and so far haven’t been interested in any of that latter album.)

I only learned this week that “The Power of the Heart” is a Lou Reed composition. Now, I don’t know a lot of Reed’s music, but I generally don’t find his style particularly suited to romantic love, at least in the traditional sense. But this song is a beauty. I find it reminds me of many aspects of the relationship my sweety and I have: she is often the first to notice the positive, and loves making plans for our future.

“You and me, we always sweat and strain
You look for sun, I look for rain
We’re different people, we’re not the same
The power of the sun
I look at treetops, you look for caps
Above the water, where the waves snap back
I flew around the world to bring you back
It was the power of your heart
The power of your heart
Oh, the power of your heart
All around the world to bring you back
It was the power of your heart
Of your heart

You looked at me, I looked at you
Your sleepy heart was shining through
Wispy cobwebs that we’re breathing through
The power of the heart
I looked at you, you looked at me
I thought of the past, you thought of what could be
I asked you once again to marry me
The power of the heart
The power of the heart
The power of the heart
All around the world just to bring you home
That’s the power of your heart
Of your heart

Everybody says love makes the world go ’round
I hear a bubble, I hear a sound
Of my heart beating then I turn around
And find you standing at the door
You know me, I like to dream a lot
Of this and that and what is not
Finally, I figured out what was what
It was the power of your heart
The power of your heart
The power of your heart
All around the world just to bring you back
It was the power of your heart
Of your heart

You and me, we sweat and strain
But the result, it’s always the same
I think somehow we’re in again
The power of the heart
I think I’m dumb, I know you’re smart
The beating of a purebred heart
I say this to you and it’s no lark
Marry me today
You know me, I like to dream a lot
Of what there is and what there’s not
But mainly I dream of you a lot
The power of your heart
The power of your heart
The power of your heart
All around the world to bring you back
It’s the power of your heart
The power of your heart
The power of your heart
Finally, I figured out what was what
It was the power of your heart
Of your heart
Of your heart”

(“The Power of the Heart,” by Lou Reed; lyrics as sung by Peter Gabriel)

Two weeks from today is our 11th wedding anniversary. I’m very happy I asked, and that Sweety said yes. Our tenth anniversary day was a memorable and busy time with a family visit from away. The current health situation and restrictions on travel and other activities will limit our plans to do something exciting this year, but that won’t stop the celebrating of our love… it’s something we are blessed to celebrate every day. “I say this… and it’s no lark”!

Now you know a little about why this is my song of the day for today. Thanks for joining me here, and please enjoy.

Here’s the video for the song from Peter Gabriel’s official YouTube channel:
