Summer in the City

Here’s an excerpt from an afternoon conversation from today. For context, I met up with a friend who is trying out his new e-trike (which he bought to replace one that was stolen last year by some heartless thugs, breaking his heart). I rode a reasonably short 28 kilometres today, which brought it to 150 km ridden since getting it back from the shop on Saturday. I felt drained but needed to wash my bike to be able to tend to the drivetrain since a rebuild tends to result in the shifter cables stretching, and shifting getting out of whack, and it really got that way toward the end of today’s ride. But there was too much noise from dried-on dirt and gunk accumulated from cycling in the rain the other day for me to distinguish the sound of the components themselves, which is critical to making proper adjustments. So then…

Me: “I can’t think of a song for today.”

Sweety: “I just got in from six hours of gardening (shrug). ‘Summer in the City.’ (bopping head back and forth) You know, ‘Hot town, summer in the city / Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty…’ I’m getting in the shower.”

Me: Ha! That works! (The song, I meant, just to be clear here.)

It’s another song I remember well from my younger years, though I don’t know much about the American band, The Lovin’ Spoonful. But, whenever I think of the song, I always hear the car horn effects that play during an interlude in the middle of the song, which the band released in 1966.

That’s all I’ve got for you today.

And now, friends, it’s back to Netflix to finish off the series, The Least Expected Day, an inside look at the Movistar professional cycling team and their 2019 season. Last week, on my computer, I was watching the fourth of six episodes of the show on the recommendation of my biking mentor (who I talked about in my post on R.E.M.’s song, “Drive”), when Sweety looked over and said it looked interesting. (Swoon!) So, of course we started watching it together (from the beginning, no less!) on the real TV set. We just finished episode four after dinner.

Now you know a little about why this is my song of the day for today. Thanks for joining me here, and please enjoy.

Here’s the audio for the song from The Lovin’ Spoonful VEVO/YouTube channel
