Suspicious Minds

Life has been busy for the last few weeks, particularly since I’m cycling a lot… Two hundred forty-four kilometres (152 miles) on four rides over the previous seven days. How I love being retired!

One indicator of how full life has been is that I only this week finished listened to the August 2, 2020 episode of Guy Garvey’s Finest Hour (“Some Heart Felt (sic) Goodbyes”) on the always faithful BBC Sounds app. I haven’t even peeked at last weekend’s instalment yet. The program has returned to its two-hour time slot, which is disappointing as I loved that extra hour of Mr Garvey each week. Oh well, I am grateful he and his crew kept it going through the COVID-19 lockdown and then some.

Garvey played “Suspicious Minds” for a beloved person named Holly, and the song has been playing in my mind since hearing it.

I have strong childhood memories of another Presley hit, “In the Ghetto,” and I think that from family conversations back then about the song it was probably my introduction to the reality that many people don’t live in safe families, homes and neighbourhoods.

My strongest memory of both songs is the backing vocals; in “Suspicious Minds,” the backup singers hold a sustained, high note then go on a run… it’s ethereal.

The song was again playing in my mind as I headed south out of the city today (a cool morning, with 100% humidity and a beautiful, cleansing rain for the last 20 km, almost exactly as forecasted). Cruising along at over 30 kilometres per hour, at one point, I was overcome with an intense feeling of gratitude for having a healthy and healing body that allows me to move with such freedom and ease. I may even have sung backup; I was riding solo, so no one else will really ever know!

On the way back, I stopped in at the home of one of my brothers and had a socially-distant visit and coffee with him and my sister-in-law in their screened porch. With all the social isolation of the past five months, I can’t remember the last time we visited in person. It was really good to see them.

Now you know a little about why this is my song of the day for today. Thanks for joining me here, and please enjoy.

This is the audio for the song from the official Elvis Presley YouTube channel. Please remember to click on “thumbs-up” on the video if you appreciated the artist’s work.
